Happy World Blood Donor Day from The HELPcard. World Blood Donor Day is celebrated annually to raise awareness of the need for safe blood. Each year, millions of lives are saved from blood donations. Most communities have an American Red Cross which makes donating blood simple and convenient. You can donate at the American Red Cross facility, visit a mobile unit or schedule a mobile unit at work, at school or in your community.
The process is easy and doesn’t require much advance preparation; however there are some suggestions that will make your donation successful:
- Drink plenty of fluids the day of your donation
- Wear clothing that allows your sleeve to be pulled above your elbow
- Maintain an iron rich diet
- Bring a list of medications and your ID
The actual donation step is only about 10 minutes long; however you should plan to stay a full hour for registration, mini-physical, donation and finally refreshments. Once you have spent about 15 minutes enjoying your refreshments, you will be able to return to your normal day with the pride of having taken steps to save a life or lives.
